BACKFLOW DEVICES AND CROSS-CONNECTION
HEALTH RISK
Irrigation systems are considered to be a potential pollution hazard to the potable water supply. Law requires that water supplies are protected from pollution or contamination by cross-connection.
WHAT IS A CROSS-CONNECTION
A cross-connection is any connection between a private plumbing system and any source of water not fit for drinking purposes. An example of a cross-connection is a landscape sprinkler/irrigation system that is connected to domestic water supply without a proper backflow prevention assembly. Without the proper backflow valve contaminated water from your sprinkler system could flow back in to your household plumbing. That point on the domestic water service pipe that supplies potable water to a building where a connection is made to divert water to an irrigation system is a cross-connection. It must be protected by an appropriate backflow prevention valve.
BACKFLOW
The undesirable reversal of the flow of water or other substance into the potable water supply caused by backpressure and/or backsiphonage.
BACKFLOW VALVES
There are three types of backflow valves typically used in landscape irrigation. Valve selection is determined by answering three questions:
1. Is the connection a direct or indirect cross-connection?
2. Is the cross connection to a pollutant (non-health hazard), or a contaminant (health hazard)?
3. Is the connection under continuous pressure?
